Nehru Trophy Boat Race
Wake up on the house boat at sunrise to enjoy the sight of the sun rising from behind the infinite sea. After breakfast on the houseboat head, check out from the house boat and move to the serene Alappuzha beach for a brief but lovely time. The Alappuzha beach is one of Kerala’s best kept secrets. You can enjoy a camel ride or just laze around listening to the Arabian Sea beat against the coast. After a sumptous lunch, you will be driven to the Punnamada Lake to witness one of THE events Kerala has to offer. The prestigious Nehru Trophy Boat Race.
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is held on the second Saturday of August every year. It is by far the most popular boat race in the boat racing calendar of Kerala and we would venture that it is the most popular boat race held anywhere in the world. The trophy commemorates the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s visit to Alappuzha. The snake boats, known as chundan valloms, that compete for this trophy can only be described as magnificent. The fervor and zeal with which the teams compete is to be seen to be believed.
After witnessing this spectacle of a boat race, you will proceed to Kochi and end your holiday by shopping at the finest shopping locations of Kochi to buy souvenirs including “gold” and banana chips to carry back home.
